10. 5ive Girls * (Amy Ciupak Lalonde/Jennifer Miller, 2006)

The schoolgirl/ruler combo is not actually a particular favourite of mine, but for those that who do like it, this is likely as good as you’re going to get in a mainstream film (albeit very much at the B-movie, straight-to-video end of mainstream!).

9. Federal Protection * (David Lipper/Dina Meyer, 2002)

Dina Meyer demands and receives a few good smacks on her very pert behind.

8. Community (Fran Bennett/Gillian Jacobs, 2009)

The scene itself is basically off-screen and played for laughs, but this is still a fine offering. It helps that Gillian Jacobs is gorgeous and the build-up – where she slowly comes to realize what she’s let herself in for but has to go through with it to prove she is not a hypocrite – is delightful.

7. Shoot ’em Up * (Clive Owen/Unknown, 2007)

Clive Owen’s character needs to create a diversion in a crowd – and after spotting an attractive mother smacking her child, approaches her and demands she stops. When she rudely refuses, he simply starts spanking her as she’d been spanking her child. Unfortunately filmed from the front and in a standing position, we don’t get to see a particularly good spanking, but I just love the scenario of the angry mother getting a taste of her own medicine and this movie is such an unlikely source. Rarely for a modern scene, this is very much non-consensual.

6. The Killer Inside Me (Casey Affleck/Kate Hudson & Jessica Alba, 2010)

Two scenes here (there is also sort of a third but it’s a single self-smacker from what I remember). The Jessica Alba scene is rather brutal for my tastes, particularly in light of what follows in the movie, and mostly offscreen – but it is notable not just for featuring one of the most well-known actresses in Hollywood but for a nice build up where Jessica’s character provokes the cop until he reaches breaking point. In a less intense film in another era, it could have then gone to a good old-fashioned OTK spanking.

The Kate Hudson scene is a brief, erotic scene, with Kate writhing in pleasure as her bare bottom gets some sharp smacks. Over all too quickly, but nice while it lasts.

5. Normal Adolescent Behaviour * (Amber Tamblyn, 2007)

This scene occurs in two parts – the first where the young lady broaches the subject and asks for a spanking. Initially her drippy boyfriend finds it all too weird and won’t do it. However, he has a change of heart and gives her what she wants. I haven’t seen the movie but by the ending of the spanking it seems to have a distinct undertone that the spanking has become a punishment due to a disagreement between them about her friends. At this point she cuts it short.

4. The Young and the Restless (Michael Graziadei/Marcy Rylan, 2010)

The spanking is all-too brief, but this scene is still notable as being the closest any recent scene has gotten to the classic old-fashioned scenario of a woman behaving like a brat and earning herself a spanking. Just two smacks are given and not particularly firmly, although the scene gets some credit for at least positioning her so we can see the swats. Her outraged disbelief:

(“Are you insane? You just spanked me!”) and his satisfied ‘someone had to do it’ response are textbook. If only he’d taken her OTK and done it properly.

3. Secretary (James Spader/Maggie Gyllenhaal, 2002)

Quite probably the one that re-started it all, bringing spanking back into mainstream acceptability. There’s not much to say about this one as I can’t believe there’s anyone reading this blog who hasn’t seen it!

2. Weeds * (Demian Bechir/Mary Louise Parker, 2008)

Sudden and sexy spanking in the backseat of a car, this scene is a true classic with Mary Louise Parker’s dress being lifted for some 20 smacks. The subsequent scenes bear the Secretary influence with Mary happily admiring the red marks on her butt in the mirror. This is backed up further in a recent episode by spanking being incorporated into a sex scene at her instigation.

1. Bored to Death (Jason Schwartzmann, Zoe Kazan, 2010)

Attractive young woman suggests some student-teacher spanking role-play in the classroom and this guy (unlike the drip from Normal Adolescent Behaviour) happily obliges, albeit needing a bit of encouragement to spank harder. Once he gets going, it’s an exceptional scene, as sound and realistic a spanking as I can remember in a mainstream production.

The scene perfectly balances sexy and funny, with Zoe Kazan’s flirtatious behaviour, perfect positioning, and expressions of pain/pleasure during the spanking – followed by the punchline of the janitor’s inopportune arrival. She strolls off swinging her hips, leaving her man (and us) wanting more – one can but hope it is a precursor for further scenes in future episodes.

Special mention:

Underbelly (Madeleine West, 2009).

A perfect build-up but possibly the biggest wasted opportunity ever!

The post-Secretary boom in spanking scenes is currently yielding rich rewards – particularly on TV, where Weeds and Bored to Death have offered two of the finest mainstream scenes ever, and it’s nice to note that 3 of the 10 scenes here came from this year.

The general pattern of these scenes suggests that consensual erotic M/F spanking is now pretty well acceptable in mainstream productions aimed at adult audiences. However, spanking as punishment is seemingly not as acceptable, although Shoot ’em Up and The Young and The Restless give some hope in this direction.

I’m still dubious whether we’ll again see a mainstream scene like Frontier Gal where a woman is spanked OTK for punishment, but without it being played as sadistic. Nonetheless, the past five years have offered more scenes in mainstream American productions than probably the previous three decades combined, even affording me the luxury of leaving out some good recent scenes (Fish Tank, Sugar Rush, The Private Life of Pippa Lee, several S.American soaps, possibly others I’ve forgotten). Long may it last.

Lesley-Anne Down

Many thanks to Colin for reuniting me with my long lost Lesley-Anne Down pictures, which I haven’t seen for nigh on 30 years or more! So now I can share with you the bottom that was all too lightly swatted with a newspaper in Upstairs Downstairs! (see post below).

Colin made me feel a bit inadequate by pointing out that it took him all of 5 seconds to come up with the pictures, but I’ve realised I was spelling her name wrong which probably didn’t help with my search results. (I’ve now corrected all the mis-spellings in the previous post.)

Although the quality of the scans isn’t perhaps the highest, the pose is perfect for a new banner. I normally make a change around the end of the year anyway, so I’ll do it then if I don’t get round to it sooner.

When the autumn run of Spooks started, I read an interview with Sophia Myles which said that her first TV credit was The Prince and the Pauper in which she played Lady Jane Grey.

If it’s SORE you’re after, this is one Lady who truly did get a red arse both historically and in the film Lady Jane. There’s usually a birching in The Prince and the Pauper too, but it’s the Prince (or at least his “whipping boy”) that gets it, not Lady Jane.

Another thing I learned from the interview was that Sophia Myles was discovered by Julian Fellowes the creator of Downton Abbey. Apparently, he visited her exclusive London girl’s school on a (ahem) talent scouting mission. He picked her as his Lady Jane and as a result she owes her entire career to him.

All we need now is Fellowes to cast his former protegee in another one of his costume dramas, (the second series of Downton would be ideal) script a spanking scene, and then perhaps we’ll be allowed a close up shot of Her Ladyship’s Big Sore Bottom!

Upstairs Downstairs

In the comments to my previous Spank Statement, I mentioned that Downton Abbey is very like the 1970s TV classic Upstairs Downstairs and a timely piece in today’s Telegraph riffs extensively on the same theme.

Writer Alison Pearson compares Downton’s “rebellious” Lady Sybil (I seem to recall using that word too!) to Lesley-Anne Down’s character in the older series:

“As for the lushly beautiful and rebellious Lady Sibyl, she even looks like Lesley-Anne Down, who played rebellious Lady Georgina 40 years ago.”

As I was saying to Father Jon in the comments, the rebellious Lady Georgina really did get the smacked bottom she deserved.

Years ago, I used to have a naked picture of Lesley-Ann Down lying on her side in a very similar pose to the one used on the header of this blog (although she was looking round over her shoulder so you could see her face). I think she’d done a shoot for a porn magazine which then got plastered all over the tabloids when she became famous. The picture was a big favourite of mine and I’ve looked for it online without success. Can anyone help? I’ll use it as a new header if a reader can come up with it.

Downton Abbey

“Her Laydyship’s big sore bottom” is a search term that was used by someone arriving on this site last week. Presumably the same person also tried his luck with “Her ladyship’s big sore arse” and “Her ladyship’s big sore bum”. It gave me a bit of a chuckle, and I was trying to find something that might interest this particular visitor (who is clearly someone after my own heart!).

I was struggling to think of much…until this week’s episode of costume drama Downton Abbey came to the rescue!

When Lady Sybil attends a political rally without permission, she gets a good telling off from her father at the dinner table. Back in the kitchen, the gleeful servants speculate about what punishment the headstrong Lady Sybil, the youngest of Lord Grantham’s three daughters, might be about to receive…

The visitor who was searching for oversized red aristocratic rumps probably ended up reading this post about a lingerie ad in which a Lady of the Manor spanks her naughty maids. If you watch the Downton Abbey clip to the end, you’ll see that the title of this earlier post is used in a line spoken by the housekeeper, and I’ve used it as the title of the above YouTube clip too.

As you can see from the picture, the drama features a fine line up of naughty maids and plenty of severe butlers and housekeepers to keep an eagle eye on them. There’s definitely some latent gingerism going on in this production. Whilst the ladies of the house are all sexy blondes or sultry brunettes, the maids all seem to be played by redheads. A top candidate for a spanking is Daisy the scullery maid played by red-haired Sophie McShera (you can see her in the clip) who is constantly on the end of a tongue-lashing from the grumpy cook.

Another maid, Gwen, played by red-haired Rose Leslie, absconds to apply for another job. When trying to hitch a lift back on a horse and cart, she falls flat on her face in a puddle. Julian Fellowes’ script failed to follow through what happened when she returned to the house with her clothes all covered in mud, but a scenario something like this Brian Tarsis drawing (which I’ve used before) would have been just perfect.

Strictly speaking, it should have been another smacked bottom for Lady Sybil too, because she helped Gwen in her illicit attempt to break free of a life in service.

The rebellious Lady Sybil is played by Jessica Brown-Findlay in her first major television role. She was named in Vanity Fair as “a new talent to watch” and has been tipped in Screen International as ‘the new Keira Knightley ‘.

Heading the right way for a….

She is shortly to appear in a movie called Albatross: “A coming-of-age drama in which she takes the lead as a headstrong teenager with writing ambitions.”

Headstrong again! Yes she clearly is one to keep an eye on!

The Singing Hill

Tanner left a comment requesting this rare clip from a 1941 Gene Autry film. The spanking isn’t shown but there’s plenty of discussion about it and a kinky butler who volunteers to do the deed. Best of all perhaps, is the classic aftermath shot of Virginia Dale riding a horse with a pillow over her saddle! Pretty memorable stuff, and as Tanner says:

“I was quite young, but somehow the idea of a pretty girl getting spanked and sitting on a pillow excited me. Spanko DNA at work perhaps.”

That was it, but it could all have been very different if Jonathan Ross was still doing the show. As you can tell from this funny clip of him interviewing Lost star Matthew Fox, he would never have let Maggie off so lightly. In fact he would probably have ended up with her right across his knee!

Maggie Gyllenhaal is currently filming a movie set in Victorian London about the invention of the vibrator, so it’s good to see her getting back to her roots and making what sounds like another quirky independent comedy about a taboo area of sexuality.

Emma Stone in Easy A

Emma Stone, who went OTK in House Bunny, is now starring in new teen flick Easy A – “a high-school comedy that comes on both sassy and cute.” – much like Emma herself then! In fact, according to one review “Stone is a comic firecracker, loveable and razor sharp… in a way that makes Lindsay Lohan’s turn in Mean Girls look bland!” As you can see from the poster, there’s no shortage of potential reasons for Emma to get a spanking in this movie!

First thing to report is that Emma does get sent to the principal’s office (Hooray!)! But she ends up with just a detention (boo!) where she meets Brandon (Dan Byrd), a gay teen struggling with his sexuality and getting the crap kicked out of him in school. He convinces her to stage a faux sex session at a big high school party so that the kids will think he’s a stud.

“The scene, which has them moaning, SPANKING, screaming, and jumping on the bed behind closed doors as their shocked peers listen in from the outside, is absolutely raucous and will go down as a classic scene in teen comedy history.” (philly2philly.com)

This video shows some of the scene (35 secs). Unfortunately it’s Emma spanking Dan Byrd with a slipper. She doesn’t hold back either!

The Spank Statement doesn’t normally feature F/M scenes, but I thought this scene was well worth making an exception for. Who knows, they might even switch – anybody actually seen this movie? Either way, Emma Stone goes down in history as an actress who has given and received a spanking in movies.

8 The Fabulous Senorita (Robert Armstrong, Estelita Rodriguez)

When a 20 odd year woman decides, for professional reasons, to knock 10 years off her age, one feels she should be spanked and, in this one, she is.

One of Gene’s 3 screen spankings. Manages to be both light-hearted and heavy handed.
