These days you are unlikely to find a cartoon featuring an adult female being spanked in a newspaper or magazine, but back in the day, things were very different – marriage counselors spanked errant wives, husbands spanked well-behaved wives, fathers spanked daughters, patients spanked their psychiatrists, generals spanked WACS, policemen spanked illegal parkers, bosses spanked pouting secretaries, – there was nothing more politically incorrect, or fun, than the world as portrayed by spanking cartoonists.

So let’s take a nostalgic trip back through the ages and look at some wonderful spanking line art. The origins of spanking cartoonery can be traced back to at least the 18th Century when satirical artists such as James Gillray lampooned the lords and ladies who were the celebrities of their day. Our current journey begins in the 19th Century with a royal lady whose name is synonymous with the era.

The background to this picture is that the British army had provoked international outrage for its use of expanding ‘dum dum’ bullets in the Boer War. Queen Victoria is having another fearsome weapon used on her by Paul Kruger who was the President of South Africa and the face of Boer resistance against the British.

In early 20th Century America cartoons reflected the ordinary family life of the period. This father/daughter spanking comes from The Washington Post of 1928. (thanks to JS666).

And this is from a 1939 issue of Picture Post which included a series of letters on the subject of caning and spanking.

This classic from the Detroit News in 1947 is a rare F/F spanking cartoon, although the husband is still behind it all. (thanks to JS666).

In this one, a cute blonde experiences the credit crunch at first hand – 1950s style!

This is a nice 1960s husband and wife OTK spanking.

Mini skirts, platform boots, flares, purple panties – the fashions show that this could only come from the early 1970s but the driving instructors methods definitely belong to the old school.

The rise of feminism and political correctness meant that by the 1980s and 90s, you had to turn to fetish publications to find spanking cartoons, but spare a thought for this poor miss who can’t decide if she prefers burning her bra or burning her bottom!

Update November 2012: Thanks to Harry for the following body of evidence that the spanking cartoon is alive and thriving, especially in Latin countries, where they are often used to lampoon female politicians. The links take you to photos of the spankees.

France, 2008 – Secretary of State Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet accuses one of her colleagues of cowardice. The Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, forces her to make a public apology. A cartoonist puts his own interpretation on events.

From Spain in 2009 – the Prime Minister (Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero) spanking the Defense Minister, Carme Chacon after she jumped the gun announcing the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Kosovo. The caption translates as: ‘Obama Surprised: If Carme Chacon is the smartest minister, what will happen to the rest of them?’

France November 2009 – President Sarkozy spanking Rama Yade, the French sports minister, who had been criticizing him and the policies of his government, and who was called a ‘spoilt child’ by her cabinet colleagues. As political cartoons go this is quite attractive (it helps that the target is quite young for a politician – 32 at the time).

The one is about the Brazilian presidential elections of 2010. The speech bubble translates, roughly, as ‘This is what you get for losing the election’. In fact the lady being spanked, Dilma Rousseff, won the election and is now Brazil’s first woman president. The man with the distinctive ears who is spanking her is her predecessor in office, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who belonged to the same party (which explains why he would want to spank her if she lost).

Another Brazilian cartoon from 2011 showing the right-wing opposition politician Jair Bolsonaro spanking Congresswoman Teresa Surita, who passed a ‘lei da palmada’, a law banning the spanking of children. Bolsonaro declared, ‘If this bill is passed, the next step will be to ban Hawaiian sandals (i.e. flipflops).’ and the caption has him saying, ‘But before flipflops are banned, I’ll use them in the best possible way.’

This recent political cartoon shows Italian minister Elsa Fornero being spanked for interfering in a workers’ rights law. The caption at the top translates as ‘Let’s Weep’, and the worker is telling the minister, ‘How many times must I tell you? Article 18 must not be touched!’

We began this journey through time with Queen Victoria, so let’s finish with the current Queen of England, being spanked by a kinky S&M version of Prince Philip. The corgi dogs seem alarmed.

Frank de Blase and Holly Randall

Highlighting the work of two sex photographers who have dabbled with a touch of hanky-spanky:

I found these two pictures on the website of photographer Frank de Blase. His black and white glamour shots nostalgically recreate the soft porn of the 1940-50s period.

I think a wide-angle lens has probably been used in this one – it has a striking sense of perspective anyway.

The categories in his free photo gallery include “beach bunnies”, “nudie cuties” “hotrod honeys” “swivellin exotics” – get the idea?

Fortunately, there’s a fetish category too – entitled “Battlin Buxotics”, whatever that means. This second spanking shot has more than a touch of Bettie Page about it.

Holly Randall is a glamour photographer who lists Ellen von Unwerth as one of her influences.

Holly’s mother Suze Randall is clearly an influence too. She worked for Playboy and Penthouse in the 1970s.

She also produced the 2006 mainstream porn flic Slut School, the cover of which is pretty similar. According to a review, this movie does actually deliver a spanking scene:

Here are two scenes that really popped out at me though as classics. First would be the second scene of the movie that stars Codi Milo, Jenna Haze, and Jeanie Marie. At the beginning Codi and Jenna are in the library when they get caught fooling around by the strict librarian, Jeanie. Their punishment is strict, pull up the skirt and get a spanking by her ruler, god forbid.

Sounds worth a look

The Spanking by Angela Strassheim

Minnesota-born photographer, Angela Strassheim, was raised by strict religious parents who convinced her she was going to hell when she died. Her conservative Christian childhood is a key to understanding her photography.

Strassheim’s second series of 20 photos was exhibited at the Marvelli Gallery in New York in 2006. In one print of 30 x 40 inches a girl kneels over the knee of a grey-haired man. Her jeans and white panties have been lowered to half-mast and her bare buttocks ripple from the impact of the chastisement she is receiving.

According to the the Artnet website:

Her photos of family life are not inspired just by her own childhood memories, but by seeing her siblings repeating the same strict behavior with their children. Many of her photographs feature her actual family members.

Strassheim captures the most intimate and uncomfortable moments of family life with an unflinching eye, whether it’s a family saying grace over sausage and eggs, or a father spanking his adolescent daughter.

Along the left edge of the picture there is an out-of-focus doorknob, giving the sense that we are peering voyeuristically into someone’s private space. Within, two figures are caught reenacting Max Ernst’s famously transgressive The Virgin Spanking the Christ Child before Three Witnesses, only instead of Mary disciplining the infant Jesus, we have a lean, gray-haired father-figure perched on the side of a bed, teenage girl bent over his knee. Her underwear is pulled down, and you can see the flesh rippling where his hand impacts her bare bottom. She appears rather too old for such treatment, while he, if you look close, lacks any sort of wedding band on his fingers.

Kate Hudson

Some really nice pictures of Kate Hudson in Miami have been doing the rounds today.

Lounging poolside, she wore a red thong bikini, which set off her famous pale skin tones to perfection.

You may be able to think of a different way of achieving a similar contrast.

Marilyn Monroe Whups Lindsey Lohan’s Ass

I loved reading your blogiversary messages, thankyou. The new header image, of Lindsey Lohan trying to be Marilyn Monroe, seems to have provoked a somewhat mixed response though.

One or two of the comments actually anticipated what I was going to say about it. Karl Friedrich Gauss mentioned the tattoo (I didn’t think that would go unnoticed for long). And Sir Vice Anglais…well wasn’t too impressed.

Monroe’s The Last Sitting photoshoot was a beautiful and moving set of images, but you don’t really get to…you know…see that much do you? So I thought I would look out some more Monroe pictures, which could hardly be more different in style.

They show her in bikini bottoms in an ordinary room with a couch. Someone has had the simple but genius idea of removing the seat and back cushions, and getting her to lie on one, with her legs propped up by the other. This unusual position emphasises the roundness of her buttocks beautifully.

In the third pic, just for a bit of variety she reverses her position, to give another great view. She is of course topless, but you get the feeling that the photographer is only interested in her bottom, and even that he was probably thinking about spanking her.

By comparison with The Last Sitting, they are ordinary and artless pictures – amateurish even, but the quality of the model certainly shines through. I don’t know who the photographer was, or what year they are from, but they are my favourite images of her.

To be fair to Lindsey Lohan though, she was once the subject of a truly iconic picture of her own. I’m talking about this one:

Not so much “The Last Sitting” as “She Won’t Be Sitting” (for a while).

Ellen Unwerth’s Revenge

“I love all the old pictures of spanking and Bettie Page and corsets. But you can’t do spanking in fashion, so I wanted to do a project where I could really let go and get girls who also love those things. I thought it would be even more sexy when there was a story to go with it, so it wasn’t that difficult to write a little storyboard.”

So said top fashion photographer Ellen Von Unwerth, after the release of her book Revenge, a sado-masochistic photo-story published by Twin Palms.

It tells the story of eight sisters sent away to an aunt’s chateau, by their widowed mother. The girls look forward to the adventure, only to end up in a series of sexually charged S&M scenes as they become enslaved by the wicked Baroness and her staff who insist that they “earn their keep.”

Finally able to free themselves, the story ends with the girls turning the tables on their captors.

The book was photographed over three days at a luxurious chateau on the outskirts of Paris. Each of the women finds herself at the mercy of spankings, bondage, enforced hosings, whippings and more – all while barely clad in impeccable 1940s vintage fashions.

And the girls are pretty vintage too. Unwerth’s fashion world connections no doubt helped her to secure some of the world’s top models. Yes, that’s mainstream supermodels, including Julie Ordon (second right) and Sarabeth Stroller (first left) in a fetish spanking and bondage shoot influenced by The Story of O!

There are some very dark scenes that would not be out of place in some of the more extreme spanking films, but the pictures never lose their sense of fun. Spontaneous and not overly posed; arty but not pretentious, this is high fashion meets BDSM with a real twinkle in its eye! Perhaps only a woman could have tackled this subject matter with quite such a light but sure touch.

Personal highlights include the stunning Julie Ordon (above) as Marie Louise being spanked OTK by a maid played by Lenka Batkova.

She made sure that at least three of the other sisters also got a good seeing to.

Whilst later the Baroness’ maid flogs Minerva Portillo in the pony stable. Hieroglyphs of pain are raised on the poor girl’s rump, which will later be referred to in the book as “fiery Braille.”

The pictures of hosings are pretty breath-taking too, as are the upskirt stocking-top pictures.

There’s also one very striking F/M picture, as the women turn the tables on the chauffeur. He is left tied to the chateau’s gate with his pants bunched at his knees while the liberated girls beat him with riding crops and whips.

Poor sod.

Very Cute Down Under

‘Callypigia’ is the word given to the cult of bottom-fancying that went on in ancient Greece, and which was often reflected in curvaceous nude sculptures of goddesses such as Aphrodite.

In the more recent past, we tended to erect statues to (usually male) war heroes and political leaders. I don’t know whether feminists would count it as an advance but, in Australia at least, callypigian statues are back in fashion.

Pop diva Kylie Minogue – and her equally famous rear – has been immortalised in bronze in a life-sized statue unveiled in her home town of Melbourne.

It is the work of sculptor Peter Corlett, who said he was inspired by Minogue’s Showgirl tour to create a statue representing the “ultimate Kylie”

Naturally, the pose is designed to show off her most famous feature to best advantage, but the model was not actually Kylie herself.

The figure was posed for by a waitress whose measurements were identical.

Sophia James (below), 27, said the modelling assignment was “a one-in-a-million opportunity”. She enthused:

I’m a great fan of Kylie. When I was younger I always tried to hide my bottom which is quite curvy, like hers. I’m glad singers like Kylie and J.Lo have made it fashionable to have some curves.

I look forward to a J-Lo version in New York, and a Vorderman one in London!

Meanwhile, fans of cute Australian girls with indescribably cute little bottoms, might appreciate these new pictures of Aussie model Miranda Kerr (above). She deserves a statue too.

Blushing-bottomed brides

Around the time of her wedding, a young bride-to-be’s bottom is highly at risk. Everybody seems to want a piece of it. It might be the last chance some folks will ever get to give that naughty little girl, who they’ve watched grow up into a beautiful woman, a jolly good paddling. And her nuptials are the perfect excuse for friends and family to get in a few swats on those nubile buttocks, before they are “given away”.

Perhaps some old scores are being settled at the same time? Maybe it’s a natural outlet that has developed for the normally suppressed spanko urge. One things for sure, there’s many a blushing bride who’s wedding celebrations have given her more than just a red face.

You might think that the wedding ceremony itself would be a spank-free zone. But you’d be wrong. This amusing picture, which appears to be genuine, deserves a caption competition. This is certainly one bride who is taking the ‘obey’ part of her vows very seriously.
